April– July 2018 Wk5: Figure Drawing, Creating Fantasy: Siren

Continuing with figure drawing and how this helps with creating fantasy art, here is another edited tutorial from week 5.

As we discussed in week 3  and 4, a lot of fantasy art related creatures/character designs are not really that complicated. It is quite often a hybrid of two or three things.

Hmmm, what would a woman look like with bird wings?

Maybe like this, and I'll throw in some latex, a tatty tutu, some goth/doom boots,....

 and some barbed wire  for extra weirdness.

What would a woman mashed with a honey bee look like?

What would a woman a man mashed with  a horse look like?

 or a man mashed with a video tape cassette?

How far out is the idea? Not very. It is just the combination of two elements.

How you merge them together is one thing. How you execute the image is another.

This drawing of Kate Pierson of The B52's was something of a no brainer.

Inspired by the track, Rock Lobster, I simply added lobster arms and lower body and antenna. Everything else, the bis hair, the sparkly dress , is Kate Pierson's stage presence.

April - May 2016 - part 1

Due to me moving house and a  heavy load of work, I fell behind with weekly blog posts. I do apologise but it couldn't be helped.

Also, I appear to have mislaid  the flash drive with all this terms reference material, artsit samples and tutorials on it.

So, my plan is this,... I will recap  as best I can, the tutorials , the samples of artist's work  and also samples of your work that I  thought represented either a breakthrough  in your development, or that I thought was outstanding.

To begin with in this first post, I will as much material form the tutorial that I still have on my camera. Some tutorials I  think I gave to Andrew  and I no longer have  record of them. 

Andrew, if you have time to photograph them and e-mail the shots to  steve.beaumont127@googlemail.com   that would be very helpful. If not , no worries.

Week 1

In week 1, we looked at anatomy and flow of movement.

In this exercise, we also looked at lighting and the use of solids.

Would the drawing benefit from being able to see the creature's face, 

or, does the fact that we are unable to see her face add more interest to the drawing?

How would you shade the drawing? Where would you place solids, if any?

As promised, I will elaborate on the subject I touched upon in class, regarding music and drawing.

I don't why exactly but music and drawing has been entwined for such a long time.

It  began in 1982 with the rock band The Stranglers commissioning me to design and illustrate a t-shirt which led to designing t-shirts and merchandise for Siouxsie and The Banshees, The Damned, The Cramps, Echo And The Bunnymen among others, and then later illustrations for music magazines, NME, Melody Maker, Smash Hits, Hot Press, and Record Mirror.

I have always loved music and comics. I never set out to  chase music related work, but it just seemed to happen.

in 2002, I was asked to illustrate a graphic Novel about the life Of Kurt Cobain, written by Barnaby Legg and Jim Macarthy. This led to more music related graphic novels. In 2010 I produced drawing for animation for BBC's I'm In A Rock 'n' Roll Band and  a hand full of of other music related tv series based on rock and pop music.

It's just the way things happened. Kind of like falling on my lap.

I am not complaining.

So when I decided to rise to the challenge of inktober this year, without even thinking about it for more than a couple of seconds, I drew a sketch of Elvis Presley

When Elvis died in1977, it was pronounced that the king of rock 'n' roll was dead. Whether you believe Elvis to be the king of rock 'n' roll is irrelevant. That's how he is remembered by many. I liked Elvis Presley's recordings but I don't think he was the king of anything. Anyhow, I drew Elvis and the idea for the next was to be another Elvis sketch with a demonic twist.

However, instead, I considered all the  casualties of rock 'n' roll excess and that idea inspired me to fill inktober  with 31 Dead musicians.

Rock 'n' roll is DEAD!

Keith Richards isn't dead but he probably should be.

I was also just having a bit of fun with this. As tragic as the many casualties there have been to rock 'n' roll excess, I find many of these artists larger than life and sometimes almost cartoon like in their flamboyance, and so I played on that and the rock 'n' roll myths and legends.

In between paid work I sometimes let of steam by listening to music and drawing anything that comes into my head inspired by the music.

Whatever you are inspired by, don't be afraid e to respond and produce something, whatever it is. Creativity inspires creativity. Don'y deny yourself to be part of it.
